SACI’s main building, the historic Palazzo dei Cartelloni, was built on the foundations of the houses where Francesco Del Giocondo once lived. Many scholars believe that Leonardo's Mona Lisa is a portrait of Francesco's wife.

A symposium organized by Studio Art Centers International on Painted Optics will be held September 7-9, 2008 in SACI’s main building, the Palazzo dei Cartelloni, and the library of Florence’s Uffizi Gallery.

Speakers include British painter David Hockney, Dr. Roberta Lapucci (SACI), art historian Dr. Susan Grundy (University of South Africa), Dr. Filippo Camerota (Institute and Museum of the History of Science), Dr. Claudio Pernechele (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Cagliari), Prof. Charles M. Falco (University of Arizona), and art historian Dr. John T. Spike.

Presentations will explore the use of lenses by artists from Cimabue to the Renaissance, further discoveries on the use of optical devices in the work of late Caravaggio, and other topics on artists’ use of optics. The program will include a welcome reception, two lunches, and guided tours of Galileo's house and a related exhibition on optics at Florence’s Museum of the History of Science.
