Nathlie Provosty (Spring Term 2003)
"Although I am deeply connected to the reality of this physical world, I see it as a point of relation to the inner journey which we all tread. To reveal this hidden internal place, I have created interior environments that represent psychological spaces. The spaces encase the figure, often a self portrait, just as the human body encases the soul. Simultaneously, the rooms are tangible renditions of existing environments and are therefore affected by naturalistic light and atmosphere. Sometimes different spaces are put together or “set up” to achieve varying symbolic messages, all of which refer to a soul’s desire to spiritually move forward. Often objects are repeated from one painting to the next, reflecting things or people of importance in my personal history. My landscape paintings are a release, or the exhale of a breath…the pause between the large scaled interior pieces. The process behind the creation of each work varies depending on its content, but fundamentally springs from the act of looking, which parallels how I like to proactively experience the world."
